The next time you’re standing in the local Best Buy about to impulse-buy something, call Frucall to see if there’s a better deal available online.

Here’s how it works: Call 888-DO-FRUCALL and enter the product’s barcode using your phone’s keypad. Then listen to see if one of Frucall’s partners has a lower price. If you’re a registered user, you’ll then have the option to order the item immediately; bookmark it for later reference; and even leave yourself a voice note. Ah, but does it really work?

I tried this on the Rescue Me Season 1 DVD, and although Frucall correctly identified the product, it struck out finding a new or used price. However, I was able to score a copy of the PlayStation 2 game Cars for $23 shipped–a savings of about $10 over Best Buy.

Frucall is cool. I like the way it factors shipping into the prices it gives you, and how it “remembers” you on subsequent calls (so you don’t have to listen to the lengthy introduction message every time)–even if you haven’t registered. This number’s going into my speed-dial list. — Rick Broida
