One hundred years ago.
What a difference a century makes! In actuality…a 100 years is a VERY SHORT PERIOD of history…

Here are some statistics for the Year 1907 :
************************************

The average life expectancy was 47 years.

Only 14 percent of the homes had a bathtub.

Only 8 percent of the homes had a telephone.

There were only 8,000 cars and only 144 miles of paved roads.

The maximum speed limit in most cities was 10 mph.

The tallest structure in the world was the Eiffel Tower !

The average wage 1907 in was 22 cents per hour.

The average worker made between $200 and $400 per year .

A competent accountant could expect to earn $2000 per year, a dentist $2,500 per year, a veterinarian between

$1,500 and $4,000 per year, and a mechanical engineer about $5,000 per year.

More than 95 percent of all births took place at HOME .

Ninety percent of all doctors had NO COLLEGE EDUCATION!

Instead, they attended so-called medical schools, many of which were condemned in the press AND the government as “substandard.”

Sugar cost four cents a pound.

Eggs were fourteen cents a dozen.

Coffee was fifteen cents a pound.

Most women only washed their hair once a month, and used borax or egg yolks for shampoo.

Canada passed a law that prohibited poor people from entering into their country for any reason.

Five leading causes of death were:
1. Pneumonia and influenza
2. Tuberculosis
3. Diarrhea
4. Heart disease
5. Stroke

The American flag had 45 stars.

The population of Las Vegas , Nevada , was only 30!!!!

Crossword puzzles, canned beer, and ice tea hadn’t been invented yet.

There was no Mother’s Day or Father’s Day.

Two out of every 10 adults couldn’t read or write.
Only 6 percent of all Americans had graduated from high school.

Marijuana, heroin, and morphine were all available over the counter at the local corner drugstores. Back then pharmacists said, “Heroin clears the complexion, gives buoyancy to the mind, regulates the stomach and bowels, and is, in fact, a perfect guardian of health.” ( WTF?!? )

Eighteen percent of households had at least one full-time servant or domestic help.

There were about 230 reported murders in the ENTIRE U.S.A. !

Try to imagine what it may be like in another 100 years.

In this article, we’ll take you through the entire process of building a computer. You’ll learn how to choose the parts you will use, how to buy them and how to put them all together. When you’re done, you will have exactly the machine that you need. Let’s get started.

Decisions, Decisions

Where do we start? Actually putting the machine together is pretty easy, but picking the parts and buying them takes research.

The first step in building a computer is deciding what type of machine you want to build. Do you want a really inexpensive computer for the kids to use? A small, quiet machine to use as a media computer in the living room? A high-end gaming computer? Or maybe you need a powerful machine with a lot of disk space for video editing. The possibilities are endless, and the type of machine you want to build will control many of the decisions you make down the line. Therefore, it is important to know exactly what you want the machine to accomplish from the start.

Let’s imagine that you want to build a powerful video editing computer. You want it to have a dual-core CPU, lots of RAM and a terabyte of disk space. You also want to have FireWire connectors on the motherboard. These requirements are going to cause you to look for a motherboard that supports:

Dual-core CPUs (either Intel or AMD)

At least 4GB of high-speed RAM

Four (or more) SATA hard drives

FireWire connections (possibly in both the front and back of the case)

Then it all needs to go in a case with enough space to hold multiple hard disks and enough air flow to keep everything cool.

With any computer you build, knowing the type of machine you want to create can really help with decision-making.

The Motherboard’s the Thing
Choosing a motherboard is the most interesting part of any building project. The reason it is so interesting is because there are hundreds of motherboards to choose from and each has its own advantages and disadvantages.

One easy way to think about motherboards is to break them up into a few categories. For example:

Cheap motherboards: Generally in the $50 range, these are motherboards for older CPUs. They are great for building inexpensive machines.

Middle-of-the-road motherboards: Ranging in price from $50 to $100, these are one step up from the cheap motherboards. In many cases you can find motherboard and CPU combos in this price range, which is another great way to build a cheap machine or an inexpensive home/office computer.

Once you have chosen your motherboard, you are ready to choose everything else. Here’s what you need to get:

The CPU that’s the right brand and the right pin configuration to fit your motherboard. Pick whichever CPU clock speed fits your budget and intentions. (If you purchase a motherboard/CPU combo, you can skip this step.)

The RAM with the correct pin configuration that will match your motherboard. If your motherboard is using a specialty RAM configuration (normally to improve performance), make sure the RAM you buy matches its requirements.

If the case does not come with a power supply, you’ll need to choose one. Make sure its connectors match the motherboard. Three hundred watts are enough for most machines, but if you are building a gaming machine with multiple video cards or a machine with lots of disks, you may want to consider something bigger.

Choose a video card if you are not using the onboard video on the motherboard. Make sure the card’s connector is appropriate for the motherboard (AGP or PCI Express).

A basic AGP-based graphics card

Choose an optical drive. If you are building a cheap machine, get the cheapest CD-ROM drive you can find. If you want to burn DVDs and CDs, make sure the drive can handle it.

Choose a hard disk, making sure that it matches the PATA/SATA status of your motherboard.

Choose an operating system: Windows XP (which comes in home, professional and media center editions) or Linux in its hundreds of different forms.

For only $20, you can build a hovercraft in your backyard. Learn how!!

Do you dream of gliding through the air? Then don’t miss today’s show when Chris explains how to build your own hovercraft. The project is ultrasimple — your kids can put it together in the backyard.

What is a hovercraft?
A hovercraft is a vehicle that rides on a cushion of air produced by downwardly directed fans, causing it to glide over surfaces.

How a homemade hovercraft works
Air produced by a small blower inflates a plastic sheet. The sheet pushes against the floor to provide a ground-hugging “skirt.” This skirt lifts the entire hovercraft.

A small plastic disk (or coffee-can lid) keeps the inflated plastic anchored so it doesn’t tear loose from the center. The plastic disk also lifts up vent holes so air can escape into the center.

What you need before you start
You’ll need the following items to build your hovercraft:

One piece of plywood about 3 to 4 square feet, 3/8 to 1/2 inch thick

Plastic sheet one foot larger than the plywood

Leaf blower or shop vac

Plastic disk such as a coffee can lid

Bolt: 2 inches, 1/4-20

Nut: 1/4-20

Two fender washers

Staple gun

Duct tape

Caution: Kids, don’t attempt to build or operate a homemade hovercraft without adult supervision.

Build your hovercraft
Now it’s time to start building your hovercraft. Follow the steps below and consult this simple diagram.
Build it: Platform

Cut plywood into a disk shape.
Drill a 5/16-inch hole in the exact center so that the 2-inch bolt easily passes through it.
Cut a hole to exactly fit the hose from the leaf blower or shop vac. Place the hole slightly off-center, about four inches away from the hole for the bolt.

Build it: Air cushion

Lay plywood on top of the plastic sheet.
Fold the edges of the plastic sheet over the plywood and secure it with a staple gun about every four inches.
Cut off excess plastic sheeting.
Tape down edges of plastic with duct tape.

Build it: Vents

Poke a hole in the center of the small plastic disk.
Place it on the plastic sheet.
Cut six small 2-inch vent holes in the sheet about two inches from the plastic disk. Be sure to keep about two inches of plastic between the vent holes.
Connect with the bolt, nut, and washers.

Build it: Get ready to go

Use duct tape to seal any holes and reinforce weak areas.
Flip the hovercraft over so the plastic sheet is at the bottom.
Stick the leaf blower or shop vac in the hole and turn it on.

by Carmen Isom

There are children that don’t have blankets to cover them in homeless shelters. There are people who are too ashamed to ask for food on Christmas Eve. There are even people who live in their cars and dig in trash can s on Christmas day just so their wives can have the Christmas present of an cold turkey leg. Believe me, I’ve seen them. I live in LA.

Now I’m not trying to be a downer by any means. I love Christmas, I love eating and shopping and mostly waking up n Christmas morning and spending time opening presents and being thankful for what I have. I think most people, sadly, are more into the shopping than they should be when they don’t realize that it is actually a privilege to shop. I find myself thinking of that now that I am broke this Christmas probably like a lot of you.

The more and more people get out of control with Christmas shopping, the more America looks like a money-hungry, pig-wallowing, possession-driven, attention-grabbing nation that we shouldn’t want it to be. But I have a solution for this attitude. Instead of trying to buy Playstation 3 or the best diamond from Zales you can find, go simple. Show those people you love that it’s not the expense of the gift but the fact that you made an effort, especially if you’re broke.

People expect gifts whether you’re broke or not especially your kids, but I bet you if you give them some simple gifts this year one of two things will happen. 1) They’ll be just as happy as they were last year and won’t even remember it next year or 2) They’ll be really jealous of other people, be mad at you and be thankful for the last Christmas they had.

But that’s not really the point of going simple is it? The main point is that if you’re broke there are really great ways to give to people and save that cash you need to pay your bills or your car payment or you could even think of giving it to the homeless shelter. Here are some ways to really save money on Christmas. Some of them are old and some of them may seem lame but if you just take one day, one simple day to go out and do this - make a pact with yourself and do this- you’ll be happier than a clam come Christmas day when you have 300 extra bucks in your picket . . .or in the mail to that creditor.

Go to the 99 cent store. Seriously, I went there yesterday which prompted this article. I got a little Christmas tree for a dollar which is now sitting on our counter with some tinsel on it. They make great cute little gifts for kids, even for adult if you wanna be cutesy and get someone in the Christmas spirit. Plus they have those microfiber things and they light up. And 4 double A batteries are only a dollar! There are also old movies and old cartoon there that will be great for movie buffs who can’t find that stuff in stores or for little kids if you don’t want to spend too much. There’s Christmas decorations and trees and everything! And only for 99 cents. Not to mention and array of food like Hot Chocolate, Christmas cookies, etc for a dollar when in regular stores it cold be 3-5 dollars. It’s worth it believe me. And speaking of Christmas decorations . . . .

Make something. It sounds corny but it’s true. Do it. Do it now before it’s too late! I am by no means skilled at arts and crafts. But at the 99 cent store, I saw a wreath and some bulbs and there you go. I was done. There was some tinsel and picture frame. And there you go. Make a slide show of pictures on your Mac or something. Free. Buy a bowl, put some wax in it and make a candle. Good one right? No? Okay, well cut some stuff out. Just do it. Don’t think about. Spend one day making stuff and not buying stuff and you’ll be really surprised.

Don’t be lazy. Do number 2.

Don’t underestimate the use of tinsel.

Send Christmas cards. Believe me, they’re more thoughtful than real gifts. I’m sorry but when someone gives me a beauty set including lotion and perfume and all that crap, I just think, gosh they don’t know me at all. Not that I don’t use it and don’t like it, it’s just not a thoughtful gift. You can get it for anyone when you don’t know what to get them. But if you send me a card that’s funny and maybe a little doll with it, I’ll remember that. And that you wrote on it . . .wow. people don’t write anymore. Suggestion - Buy a box of cards. Spend half a day writing in them and sending them out. By Christmas people will remember you as taking time out to send cards instead of another person who happened to remember them while Christmas shopping.

Last but not least, give a phone call. Those people you haven’t seen in years, or those you only e-mail or family members who couldn’t make it this year. Call them. It’s better than sending a card to or a Christmas gift. Maybe you’ll spend your minutes if you have a cell phone but so what. It’s only one or two days. Suck it up.

In conclusion, don’t go wasting your paycheck if you don’t have the money. Some people are just happy to get a cold turkey leg covered in tinsel. If you spend less money you can really see whether or not you have to start setting your children’s priorities straight and whether or not your spouse and friends love you for who you are and not your wallet. Besides, the manager of your building probably wants his Christmas gift too.
