39 Frugal Tips for Saving Money at Christmas
by Michelle Jones

There are a gazillion ways to save money, which is probably one of the reasons why I love my job so much… the information we can share with you is endless! And Christmas is certainly one of those times when we need to implement as many money-saving tips as we can; so that we can spend less and enjoy the true meaning of Christmas even more! I’ve listed 39 ways to save money at Christmas below, you may have tried some of them already but hopefully there will be something you can add to your frugal holiday traditions.
Christmas Cards:

1. Either don’t send Christmas cards or cut your list in half!

2. Send postcards or letters, instead of Christmas cards.Â

3. You can even cut your old Christmas cards from last year in half, and send the pretty side as a postcard. I did this many years and it works great, plus you’re being ‘earth friendly’ by keeping new cards out of the garbage dumps.

4. If you send postcards, whether purchased or homemade, remember they require less postage than a regular card!

Samsung’s SCH-B550 enters N-Gage territory

Sunday, December 3, 2006 9:21 am

Yeah, we get pretty excited when we see a phone like this too — the tilting screen and plethora of buttons make it clear that this isn’t your run-of-the-mill handset — but like so many other hot devices out there (save for Nokia’s N-series of multimedia computers), Samsung’s SCH-B550 entertainment powerhouse will likely never venture beyond the Korean peninsula. Besides the usual assortment of features you’d expect from any halfway-decent Asian cellphone these days — MP3 player, two megapixel camera, and of course, Bluetooth — the B550 also delivers a number of value-added extras, not the least of which are a DMB TV receiver (with video out) and what sounds like some pretty serious gaming capabilities.

On the surface you have a key and screen layout that are most conducive to gaming, but beyond that, a 3D graphics processor ensures that you’ll feel like you’re really committing a crime when playing that Marc Ecko graffiti title. In the end, though, it’s the game selection that will make or break this model, so until we hear about an imminent Gears of Wars port, we couldn’t say whether or not we’d be willing to toss our smartphone to the curb for the flashy B550. Unfortunately, only available in Korea. :-(

Stressful Sleep Loss May Impair Memory

Friday, December 1, 2006 4:18 am

TUESDAY, Nov. 28 (HealthDay News) — Stressful, sleepless nights may impair learning and memory retention, new research suggests.

Researchers say stressed-out rats kept up for three days straight failed to produce adequate new cells in the brain’s hippocampus — an area thought necessary for learning and memory.

“The stressful nature of sleep deprivation exerts negative effects on the hippocampus,” concluded a team led by Elizabeth Gould, a professor of psychology at Princeton University in Princeton, N.J.

Her team published the findings in the Nov. 27 early online edition of the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

Download of the Day: FaviconizeTab (Firefox)

Tuesday, November 21, 2006 3:52 am

Favicon

Windows/Mac/Unix (Firefox): The FaviconizeTab extension reduces the width of specified tabs to only its favicon to save space in the tab bar.

Set those tabs you always have open to just their icon - like Gmail, Lifehacker, or Google Reader - to make room for other tabs’ titles that you actually need to read. Once the extension is installed, right-click to Faviconize it. FaviconizeTab will also remember which tabs you’ve iconized next time you launch the ‘fox if you have Firefox set up to restore your previous session. FaviconizeTab is a free download, works wherever Firefox does. — Gina Trapani

Find it for less online — while in a store

frucall

The next time you’re standing in the local Best Buy about to impulse-buy something, call Frucall to see if there’s a better deal available online.

Here’s how it works: Call 888-DO-FRUCALL and enter the product’s barcode using your phone’s keypad. Then listen to see if one of Frucall’s partners has a lower price. If you’re a registered user, you’ll then have the option to order the item immediately; bookmark it for later reference; and even leave yourself a voice note. Ah, but does it really work?
